On Jan 11 2010 work was stopped on the removal of Asbestos and Asbestos related products from the old Taliva Holiday Lodge site on Beach Road, Batehaven, Bateman’s Bay NSW, Australia after the alarm was raised by a concerned resident. Workcover was overseeing the removal of the 55 year old badly weathered asbestos cement roofing by methods treating the asbestos as non friable. This is a mistake. Neighbours including children are within 3 metres of the Asbestos removal area. There are also airconditions turned on with inlets on the balconies 5 metres from the asbestos. Mayor Fergus Thomson has been alerted to the hazard and been invited to inspect the site. Todate he has refused to look at the site. As one concerned councilor who visited the site said, quote “he doesn’t want this ‘problem’ to blow up in his face”… let’s hope he sees sense, accepts his responsibilities and changes the method to include a temporary timber and plastic sealed canopy to cover the asbestos removal area.
