With increased awareness about the rare cancer mesothelioma, research efforts are growing each year and treatment options are improving at a very fast pace. Much of this can be attributed to increasing funds raised by local support groups and other organizations.
The mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation has experienced a rise in the number of applications submitted for funding for mesothelioma research. In the year 2000, the organization only received seven applications asking for funds. In 2009, they have already received 56 applications from a variety of researchers looking to improve treatment options.
The foundation was initially established because of the lack of funding that was in place for the rare cancer. As of today, the foundation has awarded about $6 million to researchers.
An official with the foundation said, “Through nearly a decade of leading the mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, I am continuously inspired by the strength and compassion of the mesothelioma community. This community, despite grave challenges, does not give up hope or commitment to a cure.”
In years past, the majority of mesothelioma treatment options have been more palliative than curative. This is largely because of the severe latency period associated with the cancer. The development of mesothelioma can take anywhere from 20 to 50 years, and patients are usually diagnosed when the condition has already reached the advanced stages.
Common treatments for mesothelioma have included surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Lately though, hospitals, universities and pharmaceutical companies have pushed for increased research on asbestos and asbestos-related diseases to enhance treatment options.
Experimental treatments and clinical trials are being carried out on a regular basis around the world. Today, progress with mesothelioma treatment is being made with the help of increased funds and awareness towards the cancer. Continued research on asbestos and related cancers will hopefully bring curable treatment options for mesothelioma patients in the future.
