Malcolm McLaren, the famous impresario, promoter, fashion designer and rock band manager who assembled and managed the Sex Pistols, passed away April 8, 2010 from mesothelioma cancer.
McLaren died Thursday at the age of 64 in a hospital in Switzerland where he was being treated for malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer caused almost exclusively by asbestos exposure. To date, no reports or statements have been released on how McLaren may have been exposed to asbestos.
McLaren was most famous for compiling and managing the widely-known Sex Pistols, an influential British punk rock band. He is widely accredited for playing a major role in the creation of the British punk rock movement and for greatly influencing the movement’s fashion and attitude.
In addition to band management, McLaren also had a solo career as a recording artist. In the 1970s, McLaren had success as a fashion designer. He co-owned a clothing shop with Vivienne Westwood in the Chelsea district of West London and designed costumes for film and theatrical productions.
McLaren also worked in journalism, television and film. Known to have worked with directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Steven Spielberg, McLaren also served as one of the producers for the film “Fast Food Nation.”
McLaren was reportedly diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma in late October 2009. The asbestos-caused cancer is notably difficult to treat and most patients pass away within four to 18 months of their diagnosis. However, a number of mesothelioma survivors and reports of extended remission do offer hope to those currently facing the cancer.
