Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral which was found to be very useful for a variety of reasons, and is often used in building and insulation materials. Its use has declined in many areas, however, because of the dangers involved in its use, such as asbestosis and the development of pleural plaques on the lung membranes.
The reason that asbestos is so dangerous is because if it is damaged, the tiny fibres become airborne and are easily inhaled by people. The inhaled fibres latch on to the pleural membrane surrounding the lung and the body cannot get rid of them. This results in an irritation and inflammation which can eventually cause permanent lung damage.
This inflammation leads to collagen deposits forming on the pleural membrane. Over time the deposits harden through calcification. The calcification process is what makes diagnosis easier, since the deposits show up on extra in a similar manner to that of bone. They are various sizes and they form over decades, which is why they are often only detected long after the initial asbestos exposure has occurred.
The presence of pleural plaques shows that a person has been exposed to asbestos. However, not everyone who has been exposed to asbestos will develop the deposits.
Similarly, the deposits do not lead to other asbestos related diseases like mesothelioma and asbestosis. A person with these lung deposits should continue to go for regular check-ups anyway because the proof of exposure to asbestos means that there is in fact an increased risk that other diseases may develop.
There is no way to remove or break down the pleural plaques, but they do not normally cause any symptoms or discomfort. To prevent further lung damage, however, one should see to any respiratory problems as soon as possible and should refrain from smoking. If any symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breath do occur, these should be immediately investigated to rule out the presence of asbestosis or mesothelioma.
